I have lots of success stories and a number who had only temporary success. It starts with fear and becomes a reaction every time a fear of any kind is experienced . Many have to play the message several times or at least when they start biting again. I will visit your page soon. I am pressed for time at the moment.......I went to your page and was disappointed. Everybody there was a loser. There were no addresses to reply to. Plus you were commercializing. My pages are for helping people.

There is a very good reason why there are no email addresses to reply to. When I started the pages I did include the email addresses however after a while I started getting email from those posting on the boards and those signing my Guestbook saying that they were getting email from (lets put it politely) people that they didn't want to be getting email from. I was asked to remove their email address - they still wanted their post to stay not just a link to their email address so that is what I did. Plus add the fact that there are a lot of younger people who have also posted - so that is why any email links have been eliminated.

Are any of your products available in stores?

You have to be a little bit more specific than the above. While a lot of people that have posted to this board have mentioned different ways, methods and products that they have used to help them stop you haven't named anything specific. There are many products that I have seen online that advertise about their nailbiting products. They include creams, hypnosis, anti-nailbiting products and much more. They have online websites that allow you to order them online........What I will do is see if I can find more information about the product you mentioned above. Then I will email you again with what I have found.

From email that I have gotten and during my surfing I have found that there are a lot of products out there for nailbiting including "hypnotic" tapes, creams, lotions, etc....According to the latest poll results on my Nailbiting pages most of the people who have voted have voted that they would "try any thing once!". It just shows you how badly they want to stop!

Therapists

Is this a tic disorder? self mutilation? I am so tired of doing this to myself but it is the only thing that makes me feel better when I am stressed or sad... I still do it all the time though unbeknownst to me. I am diabetic and I really need to stop because of the risk of infection..my hands are badly scarred and red and I too experience that not wanting to wear my wedding ring thing...what's my best bet for stopping this madness? I have tried anti anxiety drugs..they dont work... please help me..I am desperate.

Thank you for your comments. .Since your problem is so bad you may want to find a therapist in your area to help you find the underlying problem behind your nailbiting. Many therapists have read my board and have offered some tips and advice and their locations vary to include all over the US and even outside of the US as well. I'm sure that they all have contact information where you can contact them. A lot of them have provided excellent advice and its too bad that they don't make themselves more known because as you can see there are a LOT of people that have posted here seeking the same kind of help that you are asking for as well. ~ added 4/12/04

Hypnotherapists

*

Hello Rose ~ About 6 years ago I found a hypnotherapist who actually got me to stop biting. I had been to other hypnotherapists with no success. This woman was a clinical hypno. who could actually go into surgery with clients so no anesthetic was necessary. She charged me $300 but it was very much worth it to me. I didn't bite again for almost 3 years. This woman has moved away now and I have since tried 2 other hypnotherapists with absolutely no success. I agree it is an unconscious anxiety reaction coupled with the fact that constant repetition makes it an ingrained habit. But that woman got me to stop with only one visit and I still hold hope I will find another hypno with her level of skill. Imagine every other trick there might be to stop biting on my own and I have tried it! If I DO stop biting, you will be the first to know. Best Regards, J

Hello.

I saw your message that was posted to one of the hypnotherapy newsgroups. Hypnotherapy is usually quite effective in reducing or totally elimnating the nailbiting habit. I have used self-hypnosis to cure myself of this habit and have treated others successfully for their nailbiting disorders as well. I have found this to be one of the easiest disorders to treat using hypnotherapy.

D~ , licensed hypnotist

  • Hi Rose, I found your message on the alt.hypnosis message board. I'm a certified hypnotherapist, and one of the issues I have treated quite successfully is nail biting. In hypnosis, I use a technique called Parts Regression Therapy. For the client, there is the adult personality, and there is a 'little' part of the subconscious mind that is the nail biting part - it is the part that triggers the nail biting behavior. The conscious adult may not know how the habit began, but the little nailbiting part can go back, in hypnosis, to the event that first triggered it. Once that event is identified, suggestions can be made for the nail biting part to change.

For example, one client was in his late 40s and had been nail biting for as long as he could remember. In hypnosis, we took the nail biting part back to when it all began for him, and he was 12 years old, and had a fight with his dad, who smacked him in the head. The boy was angry and upset, and out of frustration, began to bite his nails. Once this was identified, the part was asked to take on a new behavior, and chose to be the part to get manicures. When my client came out of hypnosis, he was surprised that he remembered the event that occurred when he was 12, but he has not bitten his nails since, and it has been 4 years.

I would recommend that if anyone on the message board would like to try hypnotherapy to stop their nail biting, ask the hypnotherapists or hypnotists whom you contact if they are familiar with Parts Regression Therapy for habit control. It really does work.

Hi Rose,

Feel free to put a link to our site. Believe it or not, many of our ladies featured started off as nailbiters themselves. So, if these women can go to these long and sometimes super long lengths, there is hope for everyone to overcome this.

Hi there, you can apply all the nail creams and polishes you want, but without the mental side of this habit conquered, you wasting your time.

You must figure out when you start to bite your nails sub-consciously. I bit my nails for 30 years and tried several times to quit. Probaly 10 times. I finally figured out that you have to sit back and tackle it mentally, not physically. For most people, it's stress, panic, thinking, or suspense. You need to be consciuos when you are in this sceanario and stop yourself. I did it, you can too. When your stressed out, go talk to someone and have a laugh, grab a pen or a tennis ball in your hand, File or flick your nails instead of biting them. These common sense methods work, I am living proof. You should see my nails now!

thanks Kevin
