"Rather than preach against contingent pay as unethical behavior, I prefer to share with contingent-pay seekers (and providers) some real-life consequences of such arrangements which mainly puts the livelihood of the grant writer at risk. I believe grant writers should never agree to contingency pay. It is simply not fair for hard working grant writers to receive little or no pay for their efforts due to many reasons beyond their control. I.ll list several of those reasons which I have seen crop up time and time again, resulting in rejected proposals. In those instances, a grant writer's time and effort were wasted and she or he received no compensation for their good faith professional services.

..............In the end, grant writers should be paid for their time and efforts by the hour or project, whether or not the grant is received. I question whether an organization unable to pay a fair fee for work done is likely to survive. Few non-profits forced to operate in ways not fully in accord with accepted professional standards flourish and grow.

I believe in the standards that have resulted from thousands of grant writing professionals working to help raise billions of dollars over decades of time. For me, not everything should be a matter of personal opinion; codes of ethics are established through collective wisdom because we do need absolutes by which to work and live. When I see all the wrong that can befall an organization or a grant writer in contingent-pay schemes, I cannot imagine for the life of me why either would want to go that route. "

General Grant Writing Pay Rates

Fees charged by grant writers will range far and wide. But from what I have seen, experienced and capable grant writers charge about $60 per hour. I've seen some fees in the area of $100 per hour and more, and then I have seen some very low fees --- well under $50. I believe that the $60 to $70 per-hour range is usual, and with the right person, it is fair and reasonable. Naturally, the hourly rate and the resultant total fee wll be significantly impacted by the relative efficiency of each grant writer. As well, grantwriters could charge by the project once they assess the full range and scope of the job, but the flat fee for time expended would probably closely factor out to the hourly rate I cited.

However, as I strongly encourage in my article, neither party should in any way arrange compensation to be paid on a "contingent-pay" basis. That is, do not enter into a contract which would have a grant writer paid a commission, bonus, or percentage of a grant award --- or from any other available funds. And especially do not arrange payment upon award of the grant in the first place.

How to Hire a Freelance Grantwriter

Count on having to pay a freelancer before you get any grants. Very few professionals will accept a percentage or commission or deferred payment. If you don't have the cash needed, collect enough from your board, staff and volunteers to pay for an hour or two with a freelancer. He or she can clarify some initial steps you could take on your own and suggest some potential grantors for you to research and cultivate. Don't ask a freelance grantwriter to volunteer their services. Seasoned grantseekers get asked constantly to work for free. If they do volunteer, it's usually for organizations or individuals they already have a relationship with. The fact that you're a non-profit carries no weight – that's all they work with!

Frequently Asked Questions

added 9/9/08

I thought that was the intent of me faxing the information to you as a Preliminary Information sheet I was inquiring about being a client.

Please kindly respond.

D~

You sent me 2 faxes. In both cases they said page 1 of 4 but in both cases only one sheet of the fax was shown.

You stated on both that you wanted to start a business but you did not say what kind of business that you wanted to start.

Grants are not given to those that want to start a business. Grants are given to those that want to start a specific kind of business which meets the requirement of the grant program(s) itself.

If you are talking about wanting a grant to start a business without even telling me what kind of business you want to start, there are grant programs for those that want to start their own business and if I research them and find them for you then there may be some of them that you may not qualify for even though they are grants for those who want to start their own business. The more specifics you give about the kind of business you want to start the more applicable the grant programs will be for the kind of business that you want to start.

Are their grant programs for those that want to start their own business? Yes, of course there are - as I have noted on my pages. But you will see that these grant programs all have different requirements as to who are eligible to apply for them.

There are grant programs for women, minorities and grants that are tailored for those in a specifc location. So the more specific you are the more the more specific the grant programs that you are eligible to apply for will be had.

Hi Rose,

I was wondering how much you charge to do the research to find the types of grants that people can apply for. Do you charge less for research you have done previously for somebody else that may have been looking to open the same type of business? I am looking to open a salon but I have not started any real planning yet because my main concern is funding. Are grants usually large enough to start a small business or would I need to also get a loan? Any questions you could answer would be greatly appreciated!

J~

All the information about my services can be found on this page.

Each client is charged at least the $925 minimum unless the research they require is more extensive.

Getting to your question specifically it would have to be determined how much money you are looking for to start your business. There have been grant recipients who got grants to start their own salons so it is not a question of has it ever been done before.

But my main concern would be to know how much in grant money you are seeking.

Rose,

Hello, my wife and I are just now starting down this long road of trying to find assistance in starting a daycare in a newly developed area in Colorado. I understand the service(s) that you provide, and have a couple questions. Mainly, I know your research services are $925, but I did not see your fees for the actual grant writing services...It appears to me that just as important as finding the grants is making sure you know how to fill out the forms properly. Second, this would be a for profit daycare, does that severely hinder the ability to get a grant? Third, S~ is the developer in our area, do you check with private organizations in your search for grants?

My wife has approximately 8 years in home daycare experience. She also has a B.A. in Behavioral Sciences, is a licensed teacher, and has her M.A. in Early Childhood Development...She is looking to create a literacy based childcare center with a pre-K program, Kindergarten program, as well as before and after school program...This particular area has been deemed by our county as an "economic growth" area, they offer plenty of tax incentives but no "grants"...Anyway, the specific grants we would be looking for would be for new construction, educational resources, equipment, etc....

Any help is greatly appreciated, I look forward to hearing from you.

R~

Every client is required to fill out the questionaire that appears on this page. Amongst other questions, one of the questions asked is whether the project will be operated as a profit or non-profit or both? I ask that you please refer to this page because it answers some of your questions. For-profit daycares have received and will continue to receive grant funding.

Since the research that I do requires me to send the client ALL the information about the specific grant programs that information includes how and what is needed to apply for the funding program. Not all requirements are the same and some grant programs have simple application procedures while others are more complicated. No two grant programs are the same. Once the client has this information they can decide whether or not they want to apply on their own or whether or not they will want to hire a grant writer whether it is me or someone else.

My basic grantwriting fee is the same as the research BUT it will depend on the individual grant program that is being applied for and what is required for the application. The more information that is required and the more application work that has to be done - the higher the fee will be. So it will depend on the individual grant program and what they will require as far as application procedures are concerned. No two programs will be alike in what they require.

Electronically Savvy Grant Writers Needed

The institutions that are the backbone of medical research are simultaneously searching for the same thing: someone who understands the intricacies of federal research grant applications, and who can function in the fast-paced realm of electronic grants.

The pipeline of grant money is in the midst of a cyber conversion with the winners being those that can adapt. Organizations, to fulfill their roles they must be able to operate literally at the speed of light. Grant applications on paper that once took months to process now zip through computer networks and can be completed in hours. "The group of people who know how to administer these grants, all the complicated forms to apply to the different government departments - that group is quite small. The group that can do this online is even smaller; it's a seller's market."

Organizations are conducting a nationwide search for grant and contract administrators, making the pitch that working for a premiere institution such as a hospital or university can be the culmination of a distinguished career. Meanwhile, other organizations and non-profit organizations are searching for an equivalent worker, perhaps with an eye on a seasoned person.

The jobs are tough to fill because so many top tier organizations are all seeking the same talent so they can continue their momentum. Federal grants have grown enormously over the last 15-20 years but there's no degree program that trains these people. Mostly they were some kind of administrative person and there was a need for somebody to learn this, so they learned by doing, and coming up the ranks.

Federal agencies now want applications submitted electronically to ease the paperwork but also speed the process. Despite plenty of grousing by some universities, labs are swimming in new money.

Grants were growing at 10 percent a year. There's been a lot more money for junior researchers that weren't funded before; they get a track record and a reputation that helps them get more funding. The upshot: advocacy of research helped plenty of talented people get started, and now they are hungry to continue their work. The institutions that can complete and submit electronic grant applications will be first in line. Universities were either going to make a serious commitment to research, or simply get out of the game. "We knew we needed someone with research knowledge, and who is computer literate, as well as being able to train a campus and the faculty people who have to review protocols".

"It's going to take a long time, but eventually it's going to go away. Online grants will definitely speed the process of research, and we are going to make it work."
