Government Money!

Only for those that are serious about wanting to find grant funding(s) for their projects and/or businesses!

About one million small business owners are awarded small business grants each and every year!

Locations of visitors to this page

I decided to start this page after one of my replies about grant information didn't go over too well. There are so many people that are asking about grant information - that's another reason why I decided to start this page. Applying for grants is serious business. I can find at least one grant program for 95% of my clients and that percentage increases if I really DIG! But that is only because I have been doing it for awhile now. This is serious work but if you are serious about wanting funding for your projects and/or businesses then you have come to the right page! If others have received grant funding for their projects and businesses - WHY CAN'T YOU?

added 4/22/07 - I saw this Q & A website where someone wrote in saying that they wanted to start a business and they needed around $50K to start and they were asking about qrants. The person answered back saying that its not realistic to think that they (or anyone) will get a grant to start a business. I completely disagree with this. First of all all that was mentioned was government grants. You have to remember that its not only the government that has grant programs. Number 2 the person didn't mention what kind of business it was that they wanted to start. If this person had been a client of mine I would first find out what kind of business it is that they wanted to start. And I would ask that they fill out the questions that appear here. Answering these questions would give me a good idea of what grant programs this person would be eligible to apply for.

*

My last completed project was for a client that is a single mother and I managed to find 4 funding programs for her.

So yes there are funding programs out there to help you and no these are not loan programs but funding programs where you do not have to pay it back and it does NOT depend on your credit record! These funding programs exist for all of those who qualify. Don't let anyone tell you that there are no such programs because they just don't know what they are talking about!

One of the most often asked about questions regarding grants are the ones from people that want to start their own daycare and/or group-type home types of businesses and a lot of them want to operate them as a for-profit business. And the rest say that they want to operate as a non-profit organization. One of the things that you have to understand is that there is a need for these kind of services - and in some areas that need is especially great. In these instances daycare and group home services are needed badly so the agencies that serve the community are looking for those that want to provide these types of services. The questions that I ask of all of my clients appears here. This information is absolutely necessary to know before finding any grant programs that you can apply for! Daycare Basics 101!

added 7/19/05

Another thing I need to ask I quess is which really is the better. People are telling (me) to open a non-profit organization. Someone email(ed) me that non-profit money only could be spend on the daycare. That's what I('m) not understanding. I don't what to get in trouble.

Almost all grant programs specifically state what the grant money can and can not be used for so you will have to review the specific documentation of the grant program itself.

This is my own personal opinion but I think that operating as a for-profit is better than operating as a non-profit. Operating as a non-profit will limit what you can and can not do. When you operate as a for-profit it is your business and you have greater control and more freedom to operate your business as you want.

As to which is better that will depend really on you and the organization/business that you want to start. Regarding daycare (as with most other businesses) you are limited to what you can do and how you can spend any profit that you make if yours will be a non-profit organization.

Government Grant To Grow Weed!

Someone actually tried to find out some information about this and here is a few of what I found out about it.

In the past Canada has had a program where those that qualified because of their illness could receive "government" grown weed whether it was the government or a "designated" grower that supplied it. Some have even received federal exemptions to grow it! In the U.S. there were 9 states that allowed limited use of marijuana for medical purposes under the direction of a doctor. I won't say which state it was but a farmer (in the US) got permission (and a monthly check) to grow marijuana for 17 "legally" ill people.

A panel of experts will sit down to consider the first applications for job creation grants of up to £5,000 per job, under the second instalment of a popular grant funding program. The first four applications, from existing firms in the Barrow and Ulverston areas, could create 42 new jobs between them, but by the time the latest £2m instalment of government grant is used up over the next three years it should have helped in the creation of 460 new jobs. There will be a range of grant programs available to help people take their first plunge into the gutsy world of self employment and business ownership – and also grants to help persuade local businesses to invest in the grant program with more activity and jobs. There are also grants to help the unemployed find training and work and to reward firms that give them a job. The grant options which can save firms and individuals cash include:

Enterprise Fund: Firms with less than 250 staff can apply for discretionary help towards the cost of creating new jobs.

There are grants of up to £5,000 a job, but that is for the most skilled jobs.

Less skilled and labouring type jobs still could get significant grants of £2,000 to £3,000.

Individuals needing training to get back to work can apply for 50 per cent grants.

Business Start-Up grants: For the gutsy people with bright ideas who have decided to set up their own business.

The deal includes a training course on business basics including finance, legislation, marketing and IT. It involves four day-long sessions over five weeks, ending with a discretionary £1,000 grant for start-up costs but not wages. “Anybody who is contemplating self employment and wants to start a business can apply for it. We anticipate helping about 40 people in this financial year to March and we have helped about 22 already.

Small firms can apply for grants of £500 to promote their business including literature or creating a website. Catchment includes Ulverston and many villages including Lakeside, Haverthwaite, Bardsea, Baycliff and Little Urswick.

Small firms in the same area taking on unemployed workers can also apply for up to 50 per cent of wages, equivalent to National Minimum Wage rates, paid as a grant for 26 weeks – but must pay more than NMW.

A New Scholarship Program For Entrepreneurs: This big success story for people from the inner wards of Barrow and also Walney, gives economically inactive people or career changers a friendly hand up into self employment or entrepreneurship free of charge. After one classroom day a week for 16 weeks, learning business basics in the morning and additional basics in the afternoon, most scholars qualify for a £1,500 start-up grant. People can apply for one of the 30 places on the next course, starting in February 2008.

Loan Fund: If you can’t get funded anywhere else because of factors like no trading track record, poor credit rating, or you’ve been unemployed for a long time, you might get help if your plan is sound. Loans of up to £25,000 are available at base rate plus one per cent.

In 10 years these funding programs have helped 90 local companies, lent a total of £200,000 and helped create 40 jobs.

Selective Finance for Investment: This is the big stuff for manufacturing and service industries. Firms with less than 250 workers can get between 20 and 35 per cent grants for capital investment or job creation. Bigger companies can apply for 1 to 15 per cent grants. Grants can also be applied for on a per job basis, with grants of between £5,000 and £17,000 per job.

Regional Research and Development grants: This is discretionary help for developing new products. Accurite in Ulverston got one for developing a new stone cutter, while Crooks Suzuki in Barrow is getting one for setting up a computer system which copies the design of classic motorcycle parts to allow them to be made on the premises.

Job Access Grants: A series of social funding programs are run to help get jobless and sickness benefit candidates into work. Grants of up to £500 per person are possible for things ranging from a new set of interview clothes, travel and initial child care expenses, and various training courses. Firms may qualify for 100 per cent wage subsidies for six months if they employ someone coming off Incapacity Benefit.

A £250,000 general wage subsidy programme for Barrow, for taking on unemployed people, is already used up in the current financial year and will have got 63 people into jobs by March, including 10 new engineering apprentices.

For details of these and other grants available through this organization, you can contact them by phone.

2 plead guilty to bribing state official for grants

Two businessmen pleaded guilty to federal bribery charges yesterday over payments they made to a state official who was involved in the decision-making process for grant programs. Michael S. Butler, 43, had been president of TriTech Consulting, and Jerry L. Westerhold, 48, the president of Mirtech Consulting Inc. in York County. They each admitted making payments to Thomas G. McGraw, 41, of York, in exchange for grants received through the state Department of Community and Economic Development.

McGraw, who pleaded guilty to bribery on Monday, was the former manager of technology initiatives for the Governor's Action Team, a branch of DCED. He had worked for DCED from May 2000 until his termination in August 2004. The government said Butler agreed to pay McGraw $20,000 in exchange for a $200,000 grant to encourage TriTech to relocate from Maryland to York. The money was paid in October 2002 through a wire transfer to a law firm that was handling a home settlement for McGraw, the government said. Westerhold paid $40,000 to McGraw in exchange for a $200,000 grant, the government added. The money was paid to McGraw in cash installments from March 2002 to October 2003, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Bruce Brandler. The first payment was made in a diner in York, Brandler said. Westerhold's attorney, Richard Oare, would not comment after the guilty plea. Sentencing for Butler and Westerhold will be held by March 1. The bribery charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

A fourth person involved in the case, Dennis L. Smith, is expected to plead to a bribery charge next week in U.S. Middle District Court in Harrisburg. He is accused of paying McGraw $32,500 in exchange for a $225,000 grant for USTAAD Systems, where Smith was president. The government said yesterday that Smith introduced Westerhold to McGraw.

The government said the investigation traces its roots to a Maryland lawsuit that had been filed against Butler and Smith in a business dispute. During a deposition in that case, Butler was quizzed about the $20,000 payment from TriTech, and he explained what the money was used for, Brandler said.

added 3/19/08 - There is another way that the government provides grant money to individuals. These take the form of grants allocated to a particular region (such as a city or a metropolitan area) where the government wants to promote growth, typically administered by that region's SBA office or other small-business nonprofit organizations. To qualify for these types of grants, a start-up has to demonstrate the ability to create jobs for the area. For example, the federal government allocated millions of dollars for small businesses in New York City after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. But these kinds of grants aren't limited to just disaster areas — many states offer these programs in underdeveloped communities as well.

Comic Book Artist(s) - Quote:"So we, as comic artists, don't apply for grants assuming that we don't have a chance. This is baseless and just plain wrong. Getting grants is easy. You can get grant money. I have gone to France for free. I've had my comics project funded in which I was able to pay high school kids $500 each to draw a comic. I've gotten money for just being a "comic artist," without having to create anything. In addition to cold hard cash, I've also gotten lots of free publicity, good contacts and met lots of artists in other mediums who I would have never run into if I just sat around reading the Journal and waiting for SPX. Applying for and hopefully receiving grants not only benefits you directly as an artist but also serves the loftier goal of "legitimizing" comics as an "art form." But mostly, it's about gettin' paid"

Community Related Grant Programs

added 4/18/08

There is a growing trend to provide communities with broadband internet access.

In New York a grant program has been announced to help promote the research, design and implementation of innovative solutions to create affordable broadband Internet access for underserved urban and rural communities throughout the state. This funding program was put in place to help ensure that every New Yorker has access to affordable, high-speed Internet service. The funds will help build high-speed broadband access networks, foster equal and universal access in underserved areas, and develop digital literacy programs. These grants will connect government and business organizations with their constituency and customers. Last year, the New York State Legislature appropriated $5 million to provide seed money to be awarded through the Council. To leverage the funds, the Council required a minimum dollar-for-dollar match in the form of cash, in-kind goods and services, or a combination of the two. The value of the matching cash and in-kind services from the nine award recipients totals more than $15.1 million.

More than 50 applications were received for the first year of funding and the proposed 2008-09 budget includes $15 million to continue the program.

You can visit their website to find out more about this grant program and whether or not your community organization is eligible to apply. You can also download (like I did) a current list of grant recipients who have already been awarded this grant in the past.

Does your local community have a farmers' market association? Well there is a grant program that has been put in place to help enhance and help the farmers' market better enhance the community in which they serve. Grant awards of up to $100,000 have been awarded.

Faith-based Organizations - "Still, seeking federal funding is a cumbersome and time-consuming process that many small, faith-based nonprofits like his don't have the staff or expertise to participate in fully, You still have to have the grant-writing expertise, and without a full-time grant writer on staff, many small nonprofits might not have the ability to compete."

added 4/25/07 - If your faith-based organization is thinking of (or already has) starting a mentoring program you may be eligible to apply for a $100,000 grant award. The deadline is May 2007!

Home & Related

In California there is a grant program that could help fill the needs for families who need a home - One local area could receive more than $1.4 million in federal funds to help neighborhoods blighted by vacant foreclosed homes, while also aiding families in need of low-cost shelter. The city Housing Commission has voted unanimously to use the grants to buy vacant property that would be refurbished and rented for a limited time at low cost to low-and middle-income residents. The tenants would be graduates of transitional housing programs for the homeless, who are not yet able to move into mainstream housing. The city would award the federal grant to a nonprofit agency to buy and operate the housing. The proposal would require City Council approval. So far the commission has only received one proposal from one non-profit agency but are looking to hear from additional agencies that also want to apply for the grant program.

Inventors/Inventions

Our own government's defense department annually awards $1 Billion Dollars a year in grants to for-profit businesses with less than 500 employees (and yes that means there can be just one employee). The purpose, of course, for these grants are to make an incentive to those that have inventions/products that will, of course, help the defense department. As an example a chemical engineer (working on his own) wanted to develop a better battery. He submitted a proposal to the defense department and received a $50,000 research grant to make a prototype. When he presented the prototype to the department he was then awarded another grant for $750,000 which enabled him to move into his own office and hire additional staff. Over time he has been awarded over $4 Million Dollars in grant awards. He also has been awarded government contracts as well!

Puppetry

Single Mothers

"I am a single disabled mother living in a small town. I have just returned to college here and plan to graduate in spring of 08 and transfer to the University of Bakersfield. Are there any scholarships that I could apply for and is there something that would help me catch up on my heating bill and get me a good computer? My email address is k~@c~.com. Just in case you needed to know my major is social science. Thank you."

Thank you for your email. I will address your first question. Time and time again I have noted on both pages about grants and grant-related information about the availability of grants/scholarships and funding for those that are disabled, single working mothers and or those wanting to continue their education. The answer to your question is "Yes" there are scholarships and funding that you can apply for. As a matter of fact the number of funding programs that you are eligible to apply for increases because of your disability and the major that you have chosen. I know for a fact that there is an organization devoted to helping single mothers and will even help in them paying back their student loan. I found out about this organization when I was finding grant programs for a client who is also a single mother. And this is just one of many programs. You have to understand that these funding programs (including the scholarship programs) were put in place to help fill a need. In your specific case the fact that you want to continue your education in the field that you mentioned above is one of the reasons why there are scholarship programs at all.
