premiere small business destination. (And don't be overly modest about what you've
achieved: we're tough critics, but you've impressed us and now we're publishing
your story as a role model to inspire other entrepreneurs.) Hope you can free up some
time to celebrate, savor the moment and give yourself credit for what you've
accomplished.
Probably the number one reason is because they want to be their own boss! Working
the hours that they want to, working the days that they want to. And its kind of
ironic that in a lot of the cases where people are working out of their home that they
are working more hours than they did when they were working for somebody else. Sometimes
it seems that the time just flies by - especially when its something that they love to do.
Another reason? How about that commute! Regardless of whether you take public
transportation or have your own car the congestion is enough to make you want to scream!
How nice it would be if you could avoid the headache! (Of course I really should say
that while those of us that do work from home don't have to deal with the daily commute -
there are times when we have to travel in it - its just not everyday).
Another reason? How about the fact that you are actually working from home! A lot of
single parents want to be able to be home with their children but they still need to make
a living. I answered one post from a woman who had a sick mother at home and wanted to
work at home so that she could be there to take care of her mother. And then there are
those that simply want to work from home.
These are just a few reasons that I can think of on the fly now but again I ask.....

I have worked in the "outside world" and loved every job I had. We put our
very best into a job and begin to think that we are "someone" who can make a
difference in someone else's life. Suddenly, you realize that co-workers
(who say they are your friends) are back-stabbing you every which way,
thinking of course that they will climb a ladder that does not exist.
Why is it that we can't have a job in America without dealing with ignorant,
self-serving, greedy, demoralized people???? This is America for God's sake!
We are supposed to be loving, kind and compassionate people....What
happened??? If only the Ward and June Cleaver days could come back, where
the "man of the house" goes to work, likes his job and is paid well. Why
must men have to sacrifice their wives to make ends meet?
I am a 41 year old woman who realizes that I MUST go back to work to help my
husband pay for the "cost of living." We don't have anything
spectacular...yes, we are paying a mortgage and a car payment and then we
have the regular bills, electric, phone, oil, gas, groceries, etc... no
credit cards and don't want any. Every penny we make goes right out! I
would LOVE to be able to go to a REAL grocery store and have a variety of
things for my children to eat, but who can afford it?
So, here we are left with a one income family who can't meet our bills. It
is very hard for a 41 year-old woman to find a decent job that does not
include inner office BS! When will this nightmare end?
Have you ever considered working at home for yourself? I have gotten a lot of ideas
from your post but I should concentrate on the one that would bring you the most money.
Surely you don't think that you are the only person that feels this way right? Why not
do something about it? You have your computer and you have your neighborhood right?
Why don't you start some type of neighborhood/complaint kind of thing? One of the best
ways to get advertisers or sponsors is to talk about them and what better way can that
be achieved than starting a newsletter?
What about the people in your area that want to do some type of independent work
like cleaning yards, or cleaning houses or doing hair and stuff like that? You chould
let them advertise in your newsletter for a fee. What about the people in the area
that don't have a computer or access to it? You can print out a copy of your
newsletter and post it around and include an address in case anyone would like to
subscribe to it.
Why don't you just take this negative and turn it into a positive? Especially if
it means that you could work from home.

I'm always curious about a person's dream job
from both a professional and personal point of view. So many people think that
they can't achieve their dream job of being a writer or a singer or even owning a

My dream job would be billing for companies at home. I have done it for a local
Roadside company for 3 yrs, but the owner just sold the company, and my job wasn't in
the package. I enjoy working at night after the kids go to bed.
Then the next step for you then would be to find companies where you can do the
same thing. The best approach would be for you to put together some sort of
promotional package and send it to businesses (it would be a good idea to start locally).
Use your former employer as part of your resume/portfolio.
Since you will want this to be your business you should also have a business plan.
You will probably want more than one customer and planning for this will make your
business run more smoother.
Since your main focus right now will be to get customers/clients then you will have
to work on letting them know that your are out there. You can do this both online and
offline. (Again its a good idea to start locally at first). If you're really serious
about wanting to do this as your business then you're going to have to start thinking
seriously now because as mentioned above your primary focus for now will be to get
(more)clients/customers. There are a number of things that you can do to promote
yourself locally and while I suggest getting local clients at first use the online
resources that you have as well. Start to build up a good reputation and that will
help your business as well.
There are people who are doing the same thing that you want to do. A good example
are tax preparers and more specifically those who do billing for small (and sometimes
big) companies. So I know and now you know that it can be done.

Since protection is one of your highest concerns the very first thing I would do is
get together some information on lawsuits that have involved stealing other designers
material. I would gather that information and keep it handy so that you can refer back
to it often. The number one reason why I say this is because what is one of the things
that you see when you see those fashion shows? People with their sketches and of course
what they are sketching are the fashions so that they can be the first ones to provide
"knockoffs" of the originals that are being presented in the fashion show(s) - so you
will have to know where the legal line is as far as infringement is concerned.
Number two let's look at this from the standpoint of where you want to be and that
is on the highest pedastal possible.
Laugh all you want but lets take a look at the Olsen twins - why? because they have
one of the highest grossing clothing lines out there and why is that? The answer to
that is exactly what you want to know and where you aspire to be - I'm assuming. You
have to make the prospect of selling your fashions so appealing that the "buyers" will
buy it.

I was wondering what the key steps would be in starting a humor column, and
submitting it to newspapers. I suppose that smaller community papers might take local
writers as 'walk ins' rather than subscribing exclusively to a syndication company.
That brings me to the second part of this question: Is it possible to submit
(unpublished) work to a column syndication company and go from there?
And the most important part of this query: How do you affordably submit your work to
a newspaper, syndication company, etc, and affordably protect it from theft or
plagiarization? Write a number of articles (500 to 750 words) and group copyright
them prior to submission? (very time consuming and expensive) or does the Writers Guild
have some sort of protection system?
Theoretically you could start the column yourself whether it be online
or offline. Unless you sign your rights away they are yours regardless of who you
submit them to. Worst case scenario is you submitting it and them stealing it and
you suing them. As long as you can prove that its yours you have a good case.
In some ways you have answered your own post - although in some cases you could
submit a general query letter before you sent in your whole column just to see if
there is any interest. There has been more than one example of someone starting a
column on their own where there has been so much interest that the column was
later picked up by newspapers and syndications.
One of the things that I do suggest is that you invest in a copy of
the Writer's Market Handbook whether you check it out of your local
library or buy a copy at the bookstore. It has a lot of good basic
information for writers. They also have a website as well.

Could you tell me how this would be possible? Do you find anything wrong with at
home job 'commission' businesses? Or do you think it's better to start one up yourself
than working for someone else?
Personally I would rather work for myself than someone else. I read an excerpt
somewhere that said "it's the worker/employee that has the two week vacation and the
employer that has the yacht and the big house!" If you took a job selling a product
for someone else and you got paid the commission how much do you think you would get
if you sold a product of your own? You wouldn't have to go thru a middleman and you
wouldn't have to wait to get paid.
As for the business idea about the taking one of my bills and turning it into a
business - I meant it! I'm thinking about my utility bill right now (for reasons I won't
go into right now-LOL!). People are always interested in how they can cut costs off of
their utility bills and just finding out more information and knowing that they are not
alone in their feelings about their utility company - especially if they feel that
they have been wronged, overcharged or just have complaints. THAT is the business that
you would start!
This is an example of a business that one can start from home using their computer!
So many times people don't know what kind of business they want to start BUT they do
know that they want to work from home and this is a perfect idea of a business to start
from home using something that one already has - BILLS!

The most fastest way to make money is to find a need and fill it.
The suggestions that have been given before such as errand running and babysitting
are perfect examples of filling a need because these kind of services are always in
demand.
If you're more concerned about working inside your home for the most part like say in
front of your computer you should look into Ebay. Go on a "treasure" hunt inside your
house to see if there is anything that you can sell/auction on Ebay.
Use some of the resources that you already have - one of which is the fact that you
are a single mother - and a new one at that. Start some type of single mother
newsletter or something. Bring together other single moms (and even dads) via some
form of communication - both online and off. Why do I suggest this? Because while no
one can doubt the strength of a single mother there are times when they just would like
to have "a shoulder to cry on" and you could provide that shoulder. Besides, you're a
single mom yourself - who would know better - you could include those women that have
been single moms for longer than you have. Your newsletter - type thing could include
classifieds and advertising for say things like babysitting services and home repairs -
all the kinds of services that a single mother needs....

Well the first thing that comes to mind when I read your post is what was the
subject that you were teaching? Could you combine that with your love of the computer?
You could tutor online, provide consultations, start a newsletter, etc., And since
your main objective would be to earn an income you would take the ways of earning that
income via either clients, advertisers or both and gear your business towards getting
them. What is the best way to get a client? That would be to show them that you know
what you are talking about and show them why they would need your services. What is
the best way to get an advertiser? That would be to show them that it would be in
their best interest to advertise with you.
The 2nd option would be to take something that you love to do and turn that into a
business.
The fastest way to make money would be to find a need and fulfill it. That's why
services such as babysitting/daycare, cleaning houses, doing yard work and running an
errand service are always being advised as a good business to start because these are
services that are always in demand.
The best way to make money (in my opinion) is to start a business doing something
that you love. And if you are lucky enough you may even be able to find a grant that
is related to it. I have seen grants for
writers, comic book writers, songwriters and so many more.
Grants that involve writing a simple essay
to submitting a business plan along with your application.
And then there's the 3rd option of working one of the "in demand" services that I
mentioned above UNTIL you can get your own business going of doing something you love.

When you don't have the budget you work with what you do have which is your time and
effort! You have to realize that not every business startup started with a lot of money.
I once helped a friend of friend put flyers on parked cars to advertise their upholstery
business. Now these flyers were not fancy and they were hand drawn BUT the important
thing was that he did get calls and subsequent business from those flyers.
The only one true thing you need to start your own business is the desire! I read an
interesting story about Tiny Tim and how he went on countless auditions after auditions
- sometimes he was laughed at - and other times he was merely told "Thank you very
much" but he still went on audition after audition - why? Because his desire was
so strong that he kept after it. Now I'm not saying that he reached super, superstar
status but you can't deny that he became a part of show business.
My point though is that if you have the desire you will find a way! You also have
to remember that you have more resources than you think - one of the most overlooked
being one's own computer! Things that you take for granted are also valuable
resources and tools that can be used no matter what type of business it is that you
want to start.
I have seen websites from those that started their own businesses and they run the
gamut from writing professional fictional stories to writing complaint letters, tarot
readings (of which
I have my own little "fun" business doing), astrology readings and
consultations to sites that sell specific types of collectibles and cards and T-shirts.
And they all did not start off with a whole lot of money.
"Why's it so expensive?"
A lot of people that have started their own business did not have a lot of money
to start with. What you do in a case like this is use what you do have which is your
time and effort.
I do consulting all the time and there are a lot of things that one overlooks when
looking for resources that are available to them right now. For example one's own
computer is a gold mine as far as available resources go and I'm not just talking about
being able to go online - I'm talking about the computer itself and the programs that
come with them.
Offline you can start your business by using one of the most overlooked resources
that one has and that is their local paper. You have to use what you have to get what
you want and even though there are a lot of businesses out there I'm sure your gut will
tell you that not ALL of them started out with a lot of money.

do-it-yourself software people still hire others for their word processing needs - especially
if they require specialized graphics and a professional layouts such as newsletters,
brochures, letterhead and such.
So if you're really serious about starting a business of your own but don't know where

you could charge for membership. Get a Doom network started! Got any Doom secrets, tips
or expertise? Add them, give advice and consult!
Microsoft Fax - Start a fax service. You have seen them around or advertised
in one of your local papers. You would charge a fee to fax documents and your fee would
depend on the size and number of pages and how far the distance to fax to. Plus you can
charge a fee to receive a fax as well.
Used with Microsoft Publisher above you can even design your own specialized cover
sheet giving your business contact information.
Window's Sound Recorder - This is a basic program that comes with
Windows that lets you play and record wave files. (Although wave files are big in size as
compared to mp3's) You could start your own little mini recording studio. You could
record sounds for a person's answering machine. Include scary music, regular music or
special effect sounds - all according to your client's specialized requests. Get paid for
the recording and send it by email!
So there you have it! Some examples of business ideas that you can use to start your own

It is a very sound idea only in that it will definitely save you a lot of time in
the long run. A lot of people that want to start their own business want to get
started right away - I really can't blame them because they are eager to start. But
for those of us that have already started our own business have come to realize that
if we could do it all over again we would have had a business plan all written/typed
out in front of us - even if it was just for a "security blanket" kind of feeling.

It never ceases to amaze me that people want to have a business plan made up for them but they do not want to pay to have the work done. Some people charge less and some charge more but MY price remains the same.
Here is an excerpt from another that also writes business plans:

me an email asking how they could make $5K a month. They didn't give me anything to work
with meaning they didn't list any skills or interests that they had and they gave me no
clue about what kind of business they wanted to start so I thought about it and came up
with the business idea.
Like I have stated before it is not for everyone because it has to do
with the sex sites but if that is all right with you it is a business that you can start
at home with your computer and Internet access. It doesn't have to be a permanent work
at home job but it is something that you can do working from home until you decide (and
generate enough cash) what it is you want to do.
So it is a complete (complete in that it is a starting point - you can take it to
whatever growth you'd like) business plan for starting this kind of business. It will
include a basic outline, business identity basics, the explanation of the business's
objective, how to set up and start your business website, where you will advertise and
promote your business and how you will get your material to write about.
It will also include basic business information like business license information,
business forms examples like what kind of invoice you should use in billing procedures,
keeping records of your customers/clients and forms that you should have and maintain
for your tax records. Also included will be both expense and profit forms you can use
to help you maintain your business.

Like everybody else I get junk and spam email but what I noticed about one
particular email was for an adult website where photos and email could be exchanged
with others.
It doesn't matter how you feel about them there are and will continue to be adult
websites and the reason for that is because of one thing - demand! If there wasn't such
a high demand for this type of thing then there wouldn't be as many of them online.
Here is a business (or individual) that has managed to create a site where people
exchange photos and email. Where do you think that the money is made? Let's say they
started off with a hundred people (at first) - how much income was made? And where do
you think that this type of business can be operated from? That's right - from one's
own home!
Now I realize that everybody does not have a taste for this type of thing but for
those of you that do here is a perfect example of a business that can be started and
run by computer in one's own home.
I mean this is the type of business that people are looking for - something that they
can do at home at the computer - and make a living at it!

Your Own Podcast?
Basically speaking a podcast is an audio version of either your voice or some other sound-related thing like music. You record your contents and put it into an audio format live a wave or .mp3 file. Then you upload it to your website and there you have it. Now that "it" can be almost anything - anything from erotic stuff to just plain silly stuff. Where would your revenue come from? How about having a sponsor or even selling a full version of your podcast?
I saw this term on the internet but it wasn't but it wasn't for what I
thought it would be. It was for something else but that gave me the thought
of why not being a candle consultant? As a candle consultant you can help
others "create a mood" or certain kind of atmosphere - say for parties, events
and even weddings! If you make it a part of your business to supply the
candles as well, you will be able to build up a repertoire of candle suppliers.
If you will not be providing the actual candles then you can provide your
expertise in the form of a "candle planning" plan for your specific customers'
needs.
Now you may be asking "How will I get customers?" Well the answer to that
is to advertise, market and promote yourself. Do this both online and off.
Start a business plan and include how much you would have to make on a monthly
basis in order to stay in business. Also include your monthly expense which
will include the supplies that you will need. Create a promotional sheet or
flyer touting your new business and then create that same sheet online. Start
a column of your own where you answer questions from the public about
"creating the mood" and your other candle expertise as well. You could even
start a newsletter including the information mentioned above. Build up your
reputation as an expert. Concentrate on doing a good job one job at a time.
Remember that "word of mouth" advertising is the best kind of advertising there
is!

Starting Your Own Clothing Line
Actually this isn't an idea that I came up with. So many people were asking
about it - ie "How do I start one?" - that I decided to post about it.
A lot of clothing designers start small like making an outfit for a special
occassion. If the outfit draws major raves then a good "word of mouth"
advertising has begun. You make more outfits for more clients and you work
your way up. Or you can go the other route by designing clothing that
people (clients) want to buy. You design the clothing, make it and then
market and advertise it.

Has anyone tried ~.com? I am thinking about it. I don't like that you have to
pay for 'membership' I want to find a way to earn money online in those wee hours of the

There are some possibilities. Usually I will say to start a business doing
something that you like but since this mailing list is about instant messenger I will
use that as an example. I use AIM as one tool for my consultation sessions. The
conversation can be recorded and a copy kept on file for your records.
Now you can also use this as some sort of tutoring tool as well where you give
online lessons or instructions of some kind. I have seen people give tarot and
astrology readings using some sort of instant messenger type program.
I have also participated in some Yahoo Messenger chats and the same principles can
be applied to those also.
For those hours that you are sleeping you can have a website that lets everyone know
that you do chat sessions and if they want to find out anymore information about it
they can email you.

Someone recently did a search looking for information on how to start their own
webcam business. If you wanted to start your own webcam business it would not be that
difficult to start. I think that the most difficult part would be if you were new to
webcams and operating them. Most webcams come with some type of instruction. For
example my webcam is a logitech and it came with software and instructions.
The most important thing is deciding how you will make your income from using your
webcam. Most webcam pages charge for gaining access to their webcam pages. Payments can
be made discreetly and securely online! Of course you will have to let the world know
that your webcam pages are up and ready but just like getting any other business started
this would be advertising and optimizing your webpages for the search engines.
There are "no cost" and low cost ways that people use to advertise their websites.
